CURRICULUM VITAE (CV) – STRATEGY AND RECOMMENDATIONS

ACADEMIC | HEALTHCARE | SCIENTIFIC
Some fields and roles require a CV instead of a resume. It is key to first understand the differences between the two. According to Indeed (2020), CVs are a detailed (comprehensive) account of your work and educational experience and are used in academic setting and for applying to positions outside of the United States. The difference between a CV and a resume lies in the length, layout, and purpose of these documents.

CVs have no length limit; resumes are typically one to two pages long. A CV details the whole course of the candidate’s academic career; a resume summarizes skills and work experience
(Zety.com).

Similarities between Resume and CV Branding Approach
• Start with Branding Headline and Statement – professional branding is still recommended and beneficial.
• An ATS-friendly approach is still important for CVs.
• Reformat per our POV including removal of underlines, shading, border and graphic elements – specifically in the body of the resume.
• Make detailed comments – “While our recommendation is to reduce content….., this will be directed by your audience and search objectives….”

Differences for CV Branding Approach
• Leave all experience without condensing or omitting entries or years – length is not a factor with the CV.
• Apply a lighter and sensitive touch when editing.
• Over compensate with comments including one recommending an addendum for comprehensive bibliography.
• Often Education and Credentialing are placed before Experience.
• Formatting, aesthetics, and placement are key in CVs since it is much more about listing experience instead of accomplishments.
• Bullet point accomplishments are more important for academic staff vs. academic faculty CVs.
• Other sections that are more applicable for academic CVs vs. industry resumes are:
Publications.
▪ Research.
▪ Presentations / Speaking Engagements / Panels.
▪ Course instruction.
▪ Conference / Workshop / Symposia Attendance.
▪ Committee Involvement.
