Duties

  • Provides recreation regulation and ethics information to visitors.
  • Monitors visitor use patterns and impacts to resources.
  • Monitors commercial and competitive special recreation permits.
  • Coordinates recreation projects including planning, designing, surveying, construction, and maintenance of trails, campsites, etc., as required.
  • Gathers and analyzes data related to existing recreational resources to recognize prominent trends.
  • Prepares recreation areas and sites for visitor use, to include planning, operation, and required maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-07:
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:


  • Managing outdoor recreation management related projects
  • Supervising crews or individuals performing land management type work
  • Assessing and performing maintenance on outdoor recreation facilities such as trailheads, campgrounds, or trail systems

Education Substitution for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-07:
You must have successfully completed one full academic year of graduate education (18 semester hours/27 quarter hours) with a major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position of Park Ranger duties. Official transcripts must be submitted to support this.

Combination of Education and Experience for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-07:


You may meet the qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full-time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12-month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of one year of graduate study leading to a master’s degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100%. Official transcripts must be submitted to support this.

Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) with a bachelor’s degree for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-07:
S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled based on the courses listed above for Education. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

  1. Class standing — Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)– Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B” or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B+” or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

  • Recreation facility management and visitor interactions

You must have at least two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or a master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited college or university in a filed directly related to the work of the position to include: natural resources management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely relate subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in this position.
