At Ports America the General Manager has a critical role in the assigned business entity. In addition to the operational responsibilities to meet or exceed profit, revenue, customer service, and operational targets, the General Manager a key leadership role in the organization with responsibility for growing the business and identifying and developing the potential in all employees.

 Essential Duties:

  •  Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with new and existing customers; participates in activities to secure new business and enhances the company’s position as the service-provider of choice. Participates in the evaluation of new business opportunities to determine profitability and viability. Approximately 60%+ of time will be dedicated to overall growth initiatives.
  • Oversees the efficient and effective operation of assigned marine container and general cargo terminals to meet established performance targets and KPIs. This includes contractual performance, insurance claims management, labor planning, and labor effectiveness.
  • Prepare and execute annual financial and operating plans for the assigned business entity. Develops and drives the annual operating and capital budgets. Conducts periodic reviews of operating plans and budgets and adjusts forecasts as business conditions warrant.
  • Champions the company’s efforts and programs which ensure the safety of all employees and adherence to all company and government agency safety requirements. Ensures total compliance with all environmental regulations and is responsible for the timely filing of environmental reports. Actively involved in programs to reduce workers compensation claims and lost time injury frequency rates.
  • Participates in the development of the company’s labor relations strategy. Maintains positive relationships with labor union officials. Represents the company in industry, collective bargaining, and governmental policy setting bodies.
  • Ensures implementation of all corporate policies and procedures.
  • Regularly prepares and delivers employee communications; is actively involved in employee engagement activities and plays a key role in the identification and development of high potential talent.

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Maritime Studies, or a related discipline.
  • 15+ years of progressive port operations experience.
  • Experience with large multi-user terminal operations including experience in all aspects of stevedoring/terminal operations and equipment.
  • Previous fiscal responsibility, including experience creating financial and operating plans.
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining agreements and experience developing a labor relations strategy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong communications skills (written and oral) to work cross-functionally with all levels of the organization, government agencies and customers.
  • Experience presenting to executive leader.
  • Ability to solve problems and make sound business decisions.
