The Director, Safety – ASAP Programs is responsible for the quality and functionality of American Airlines (AA) Aviation Safety Action Programs (ASAP). These key reporting programs are an essential input into AA’s Safety Management Systems (SMS). ASAP provides an effective way to obtain unfiltered information directly from our frontline team members to manage risk in the operation. This information is critical for making informed decisions to enhance corrective actions and risk management.


What you’ll do

  • Directs the implementation of policies, procedures, and programs designed to elicit compliance with Support ASAP Managers to ensure program effectiveness
  • Engage senior leadership to ensure partnership by sharing program value and ensuring appropriate program support
  • Ensure partnership with operational leaders to ensure ASAP effectiveness
  • Ensure ASAP data is properly analyzed, shared and actioned
  • Provide a culture for the ASAPs to collaborate, share and learn
  • Engage, support and resolve issues for the ASAP Event Review Committees as required
  • Allow for continuous development opportunities for the ASAPs
  • Drive engagement with key stakeholders
  • Ensure ASAPs alignment with organizational goals
  • Provide input into the monthly AA SMS process
  • Perform his/her duties under strict confidentiality guidelines
  • Ensures development of leaders and team members
  • Travel (up to 25%) -domestic and international destinations


All you’ll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Aviation, or Technical Field related to Aviation or equivalent experience/training. 
  • 7 years of experience leading large teams in safety programs, technical operations, integrated operations control, airport operations, or cargo. 

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience


  • Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Master’s degree 
  • FAA Certificate (e.g. Pilots, Mechanics A&P, Dispatcher, etc.)

  • Extensive experience implementing procedures and ensuring consistent service delivery.
  • Ability to influence others through outstanding interpersonal skills, collaboration, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to be an action-oriented and results-driven leader, with a natural aptitude for engaging employees across multiple workgroups.
  • Ability to think strategically, negotiate skillfully, digest complex details, and use sound judgment and initiative in making decisions. 
  • Ability to handle simultaneous operational issues, prioritize and work well under pressure. 
  • Ability to build and facilitate relationships at all levels of the organization, both internally and externally. 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with ability to handle complex topics comfortably and to interact effectively with all levels, both verbally and written. 
  • Ability to work a varied schedule.
  • Ability to travel, as needed.
