Summary
Experienced, solution-driven marine insurance professional responsible for overseeing all aspects of Crowley’s marine and casualty risk management and insurance programs. This role leads the procurement and administration of marine insurance coverage, ensures alignment with business objectives, and supports contract negotiations involving risk and indemnity provisions. While the primary focus is on marine-related risks, the Director also provides leadership and support in the administration of non-marine insurance programs and related projects, as directed by the VP of Risk Management. The Director maintains critical relationships with brokers, underwriters, and P&I Clubs, acting as a key advisor to Crowley business units. Reporting to the VP of Risk Management, and ultimately to the General Counsel, the role requires deep expertise in identifying, evaluating, and mitigating marine-related risks through effective risk transfer strategies. Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills are essential.
General Responsibilities
- Lead marine insurance procurement, renewal, and risk analysis activities across the enterprise, including insurance supported financial security.
- Negotiate insurance pricing, terms, and coverage with insurers and brokers in coordination with internal stakeholders.
- Review and advise on contractual insurance and indemnity clauses, particularly those related to vessel operations and maritime services, and review contract security provisions and direct contract security (bond) administration.
- Serve as the organization’s subject matter expert on marine risk and insurance, regularly briefing senior management on coverage, risk trends, and market conditions.
- Develop customized risk transfer and insurance solutions for vendors, partners, and third-party relationships.
- Support mergers, acquisitions, and vessel transactions from a marine insurance perspective, as needed.
- Assist Risk Management’s Claims leaders in managing marine-related claims and litigation, ensuring effective resolution strategies, as needed.
- Collaborate with safety, claims, legal, and operational teams to reduce exposure and drive proactive risk management initiatives.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field. Professional certifications preferred:
- Associate in Marine Insurance Management (AMIM)
- Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU)
- Associate in Risk Management (ARM)
- Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC)
- RIMS Fellow (RF) or equivalent designation
Experience
- 10 years of experience in risk management, underwriting, or broking, with a strong emphasis on marine or maritime risks.
- 5-7 years of direct marine industry experience is strongly preferred.
Technical Proficiency
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Teams. Experience with working in Risk Management Information Systems (RIMS) such as Riskonnect.
